World Cup in Åre

29 March, 2007

This winter holiday I spent in Åre. Our family went there for skiing. This year was a bit special because the Alpine WC took place for two weeks there. WC is a big arrangement for this small village. The preparations started several years ago and have been going on since then. They have for example built a brand new lift and a gigantic stand and space for media. The WC slope was not open for the public. So the tourists were only allowed to go skiing in the other slopes which were excellent. During the competitions there were almost no people in the other slopes. Down in the village there were a lot of big arrangements and tents with different companies that advertised and that attracted a lot of people. There was a big stage in the village where the winners received their medals. The last day they held a competition for all the old world-famous ski stars. For example Ingemar Stenmark, Luc Alfons, Piero Gros and Bojan Kriszaj. Stenmark was the manager of one of the teams and Kriszaj was the manager for another team. One of Sweden’s most famous alpine skiers – Thomas Fogdö – arranged the whole competition. After a ski accident he became disabled. The money that was collected was for rehabilitation for other injured athletes.

Carnival

29 March, 2007

Tuesday the sixth of February we had a funny carnival in our school. The school arranges that once a year. Both pupils and teachers are welcome. You have to come rigged out. All the pupils have a lot of fantasy and many of them spend a lot of time making the dress as fun and beautiful as possible. When you reach the carnival house you get a lovely full meal. You are not allowed to sit next to your best friend. The aim is tom make some new friends.

After a dinner it´s time for games and disco. During the night a jury chooses some winners later in the night. One boy was dressed out 50/50, half as a soccer player and half as a gentlemen. A lot of hippies showed up. My teacher was a chocolate bar and I was a hip hopper with my friend. Our headmaster was painted white in her face and had a big black nose and big black clothes. The teachers did their own performances. Everybody had a great time! The next day we had a late morning…

Our aim with this newsletter is to keep up and develop our contacts we already have with other schools (twin schools) and hopefully to get in contact with new schools.

Another aim is, of course, to give the pupils opportunities to practise their English in another way, a more natural way perhaps, if compared with the classroom situation. Our pupils will contribute material and articles to this newsletter, that should be of interest for the pupils and the schools in question.

We will publish newsletter once a month. Hopefully you (our twin schools) would like to do something similar. We hope finally, that there will be a strong will to meet and visit each other for mutual understanding, cooperation, learning and enjoyment.
